Three Sisters From New Orleans Find HOPE in Jackson
Three New Orleans sisters fled the city with only the clothes on their backs and came north to Jackson to stay with a fourth sister. The sisters, Sheila, Denise and Cecilia, found a place to live this week. But very quickly it became apparent they couldn't proceed much further without a bank account. So, their fourth sister, a member of HOPE, brought them to Hope Community Credit Union branch at the Medical Mall.
"They needed to get accounts to transact business, to pay for rent, for utilities, to look for work," said HOPE member service representative Crystal Woodard. "Their next stop was to go find some clothes that matched ... they were embarrassed."
They needed a bank account more desperately than clothes or a job. That's how important HOPE's role is and will be. (One of the three had previously had a bank account, but it was with a credit union either destroyed or disabled by the storm.) In fact, storm victims are required to have an open bank account to receive electronic transfer of funds from federal disaster relief agencies, and these sisters left with wiring instructions to give to FEMA officials.
Opening accounts is just one of the ways ECD/HOPE is moving to help storm victims.
ECD/HOPE is building a long-term, storm recovery plan that will include special mortgage, consumer and business loans that take into consideration the financial traumas inflicted on refugees, such as unintentional late payments, temporary loss of employment and the need for emergency cash and bridge loans.
Just a week after the storm and days after filing for benefits, existing HOPE members from low-income communities in New Orleans are already receiving electronic fund transfers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
